What is Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a fluid that exists in every single living organism. It keeps the entire body lubricated and moisturised, with the highest concentrations found in the skin and synovial fluid in the joints.
HA in our joints is a long, and complex molecule that forms into a ball shape, which resists compression. As we age, those molecules break down and lose their ability to keep a ball shape, resulting in pain and stiffness. This molecule is part of a group of macromolecules, known as glucosaminoglycans (GAG's), which are an important network of substances providing structural integrity to cells and joints. Scientific research reveals that HA is able to hold more water than any other natural substance. Its unmatched hydrating properties result in increased smoothness and softening of tissue.
HA was discovered in 1934. It's joint care benefits became popularised worldwide after an ABC News report on "The Village of Long Life". The report revealed that 10% of the population is over 85 years old, and they still have substantial joint flexibility. It was discovered that in this Japanese village just north of Tokyo, the residents ate a diet that was very high in sweet potatoes and vegetables, both of which contribute to the synthesis of HA. High levels of HA were found in their bodies and this is directly linked to their improved joint health.

How does Hyaluronic Acid work?
Hyaluronic Acid is plentiful in our bodies when we are born, but it's levels gradually recede over time. This reduction in HA levels may be a big part of the ageing process which we see. Hyaluronic Acid occurs in the deeper layers of our skin known as the dermis and it appears to help keep the skin smooth because of it's water retention qualities. Hyaluronic Acid also apparently helps to repair skin wounds and certain other problems.

Hyaluronan occurs throughout the body in abundant amounts in many of the places people with hereditary connective tissue disorders have problems such as joints, heart valves and eyes. Hyaluronic acid abnormalities are a common thread in connective tissue disorders. Interestingly, they are also common biochemical anomalies in most of the individual features of connective tissue disorders such as mitral valve prolapse, TMJ, osteoarthritis, and keratoconus.

Apply to skin, morning and night, as needed.
